SEA LEVEL RISE

Relative Sea level rise as driver for extreme events impacts

  • The IPCC report indicates that global mean sea levels will most likely rise between 0.29 and 1.1 meters by the end of the century.

  • Sea level rise is primarily driven by thermal expansion of the ocean as it warms, as well as melting glaciers and ice sheets.

  • The rate of sea level rise is projected to increase over time, with some estimates suggesting it could exceed several centimeters per year in the 22nd century.

  • Sea level rise will not be uniform globally. Certain regions, particularly low-lying coastal areas and islands, will be more vulnerable to the impacts of rising sea levels.
